Needing accommodations to navigate the world includes the shoes on our feet, the cars we drive and the devices at our fingertips.
Last night I lost my balance, quickly grabbing the edge of the kitchen island to prevent my fall. That really startled me.
Then the box of cereal in my right hand upended, its contents completely on the floor in seconds.
I bit my lip and was about to curse when she stepped in and told me, “I got it.”
I hobbled to the couch. I felt stupid. I should’ve… “Hang on, Bri, you had no idea that was going to happen”, I thought. I was more upset about the cereal because that stuff’s so damn expensive.
Note how I spotted my self-talk as I was starting to should all over myself. That’s a skill that can prevent you from going down many a rabbit hole of self-punishment. Time better spent on learning, yeah?
I consider all of my conditions to be my teachers.
My right leg has been slowly losing feeling, and today I started losing balance repeatedly, placing my hand on a wall to right myself.
This is an expected progression of my chronic conditions unfortunately.
It’s clear I need to start using my cane in the house. Its the reality.
Another accommodation, one more thing, so life can keep moving forward, even when its different than I’d like.
