That persistent voice urging “Don’t give up!” first spoke to me on a cold day in elementary school, and has stayed with me through life’s toughest times.
“Don’t give up, Bri, keep going, this is NOT as good as it gets.”
I remember hearing that voice for the first time when I was in elementary school. It was a cold, blustery day in the schoolyard (parking lot). I was feeling hopeless about something and thought about giving up. At that moment, the voice appeared.
I don’t know what it is or where it comes from, it could be my conscience, Jiminy Cricket or something else entirely. At this point, I’m less interested in the source than grateful that it’s still with me. That voice has often been the only thing that has kept me going when things otherwise seemed hopeless. It’s easy to lose perspective when you’re swimming in feelings of anxiety, depression, and helplessness.
Growing up, I often felt all alone in the world, like no one understood that I was really doing my best, but I was always confused about what others wanted me to do. I kept messing up and was often reduced to tears because so many people were upset with me, and often.
That voice kept me going through the darkest times when nothing else could. All these years later, it has nurtured the spectacular resilience that I now embody. By learning from every experience I can, I developed the ability to connect with my inner strength.
What about you? Do you have something that keeps you going when you feel like giving up? Some inner voice urging you forward? I’d love to hear your story in the comments below. You never know who your experience might inspire.
